IS Sahand F 74

The Iranian frigate IS Sahand F 74, was a British-made Vosper Mark V class frigate (also known as Alvand class frigate or the Saam class frigate). Sahand was commissioned as part of a four-ship order. The ship was originally called Faramarz, named after a character in Ferdosi's Shahnameh. However after the Islamic Revolution it was renamed Sahand, after the Sahand volcano.

The United Kingdom built all four ships which were originally armed with nine Sea Cat anti-air missiles and five Sea Killer anti-ship missiles. Iranian Navy has replaced the missiles with Chinese equivalents.

The IS Sahand was sunk in Operation Praying Mantis. She was hit by two Harpoon missiles and a Skipper-II laser-guided bomb, and finished off with Rockeye cluster bombs by Green Lizard A-6E Intruders. She has since then been raised and broken up for scrap

Despite the loss of Sahand F 74, one of Iran's most modern ships, the Iranian navy continued to fight on. Later in the day, the Sahand's sister ship, Sabalan F 73, departed from its berth and fired a surface-to-air missile at several A-6Es from VA-95.

Operation Praying Mantis is one of five American naval engagements cited by United States Naval Academy Prof. Craig L. Symonds in his book Decision at Sea (2005) as being decisive in establishing U.S. naval superiority. The others were the Battle of Lake Erie (1813), the Battle of Hampton Roads (1862), the Battle of Manila Bay (1898), and the Battle of Midway (1942).
